Behind the Characters: Dead Heroes Brigade by Shawn Toshikian & Michael Huang

Dead Heroes Brigade: Is the unofficial name for the twenty-three surviving members of the Valley of Death Event.

Timetable for the Valley of Death Event: In 1947 the US government upon activating an overlapping radar/sonar system for the continent found a blank area (Note: Later labeled the “Valley of Death”). The area was roughly half a mile long and a quarter-mile wide. The government does NOT adhere to unknown quantities, so an investigation was initiated. A military investigative team relayed to Command and Control that the area was a national threat and needed to be secured. (Note: What transpired to convey this as a threat has been classified.)

A Marine brigade (1,500 strong) was stationed outside the blank spot; which turned out to be a cannon, a crevice in the earth. It was not only radar/sonar invisible but visually impenetrable and shrouded in a thick fog. All recording devices that entered the area revealed nothing more than rocks and mist. The scientific advisors determined it was safe to proceed with a human team.

General Thornton ordered a twenty-three man group into the “valley”. What happened next is a bit unclear, but all contact was lost. When the Military responded with another team they found the previous encampment gone. All personnel and equipment wiped clean from the area; except for the twenty-three soldiers who had gone into the valley. All of them were standing at attention, naked, unresponsive and standing in positions around the front of the valley.

The soldiers were removed to a secure location. When one of the soldiers, V.M.C.C. #16, was stuck with a needle all twenty-three men awoke to consciousness simultaneously, even though they were all in separate locations. The soldiers are connected. After the soldiers awoke the doctors discovered, although they appeared normal they were not. When one of the twenty-three sustained an injury to their physical body, the open wound would not heal, but seal over. They could not die from any mortal wound. Their bodies continued “living” no matter how much damage they sustained. As revealed in the most extreme case of V.M.C.C. #02 beheading. Only if their brain sustained complete destruction did they cease to be.

The twenty-three soldiers, later to be called the 23 or Dead Heroes Brigade, were declared dead and stripped of externals lives outside military service unless otherwise authorized. The 23 became a highly trained team of operatives used for the express purpose of covert missions that had a success rating of 12% or less. The military sealed the area around the Valley of Death and even to this day it is an enigma that has yet to shed answers.

V.M.C.C. #02
Real Name: Classified L.R.4
Classified: Deceased
Familiar Name: Mother
Rank: NCO, second in command.
Status: Semi-Retired: will participate in operational details and surveillance. Currently owns and runs the Pale Horse Saloon within the Valley Restricted Area (V.R.A).
Ethnic Background: Scottish-American
Current Condition: Changed, V.M.C.C. #02 entire body is missing only his head exists.
Incident 11/15/82: Beheaded by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN). V.M.C.C. #02 intact head was recovered by the EVAC team, but the body was never located.
Opinion: The body was burnt to ash. However, V.M.C.C. #02 still believes his body exists somewhere and is trying to locate it. This is the ultimate case of phantom limb syndrome.

V.M.C.C. #09
Real Name: Classified L.R.4
Classified: Deceased
Familiar Name: Chuck
Rank: Private
Status: Active
Ethnic Background: Puerto Rican
Current Condition: Changed, V.M.C.C. #09 is missing his left eye and ear and a large section of his head.
Incident 03/02/63: A .44 magnum was fired point-blank through V.M.C.C. #09 left eye as he assassinated Fidel Castro. Note: Fidel Castro was successfully replaced with a look-alike agent.
Opinion: V.M.C.C. #09 does not like to shy away from exhibiting his disfiguration. All non-sanctioned civilian exposure should be denied.

Pre-Event: Classified L.R.4
Opinion: V.M.C.C. #11 enjoys the feeling of being shot. He feels like, “it’s the only time I know I’m alive.” Each gunshot wound he has tattooed with a date and one word. A word that only has meaning for him. May need to be put down at a later date.

Pre-Event: Classified L.R.4
Incident 02/02/01: V.M.C.C. #18 lost his pinkie breaking up a dog fight.
Opinion: V.M.C.C. #18 appears to be a man of strong religious conviction. However, the ever-growing self-inflicted slash marks covering his back, display a deeper disturbing psychosis. V.M.C.C. #28 is a miracle hunter, looking for evidence of God.
